Overview

A bichectomy is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves the removal of the Bichat fat pads located in the cheek area. These fat pads are two small balls of fat that sit inside the cheek and contribute to a rounded appearance of the face. The goal of bichectomy is to reduce the fullness of the cheeks, resulting in a slimmer, more defined facial contour. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Recovery time varies but can take several days to a week.

The ideal candidate for Bichectomy

An ideal candidate for a bichectomy is someone who is looking to enhance the contour of their face by reducing the fullness of their cheeks. This procedure is often sought by individuals who want to achieve a more defined and chiseled look. The ideal candidate should be in good health, a non-smoker, and have realistic expectations about the results of the procedure. It is important to note that bichectomy is not a weight loss procedure, and the best results are achieved in individuals with good skin elasticity.

What should I do Before my procedure?

The time leading up to your surgery is very important. To get an excellent result from your plastic surgery procedure, there are some checkboxes you'll want to tick leading up to your procedure.

  • Get the lab tests our surgeon instructs, fill out the paperwork we send you, and pay for insurance coverage.

  • STOP SMOKING! WE MEAN IT!  By restricting blood vessels, nicotine decreases the blood flow throughout your body. Plastic surgery is extremely delicate, and your blood vessels play a major role in the results. If they are restricted, the results are compromised.

  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.

After the Procedure

The first night after the procedure, you will experience temporary bruising, swelling, and numbness. The first night is the worst (TRUST US). You may experience some pain and discomfort, but this can usually be managed with pain medication prescribed by your surgeon. You may also have difficulty speaking or eating, this is why it is so important that you rest and avoid strenuous activity.

The day after the procedure, you will still be swollen and in quite a bit of pain, you can expect some swelling in the cheek area, which may make it difficult to eat or speak. You can reduce swelling by applying cold compresses or using a surgical cushion. You will have your first control appointment with your surgeon, who will prescribe additional antibiotics, anticoagulants, and pain medication for you to take.

The first week after the procedure, You will have a second control appointment with your doctor on Day 3 and then another on Day 7. You can expect to see significant improvement in the swelling and discomfort in the cheek area. The pain should be minimal, and you should be able to manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication. Additionally, you can expect an improved range of motion, you should be able to move your mouth and cheeks more easily, as the numbness in the area begins to subside. Most people are able to return to their normal activities, including work and exercise, within a week after a bichectomy.

The first month after the procedure, if you are still feeling tired, and a bit sore at this point, don´t worry, it will take a few weeks or months to feel completely like yourself again. The final results of your bichectomy will become apparent over the next several weeks as the swelling continues to subside and the cheek area settles into its new shape.

You may notice some scarring in the cheek area, but this will typically fade over time and become less noticeable. It is important to continue to follow your surgeon's instructions and to report any concerns or problems to them as soon as possible. The healing process can vary from person to person, but most people are able to see their final results within the first month after a bichectomy.

This period is often called the “roller coaster” time period because you will go through mixed emotions of excitement, frustration, and happiness as you come to grips with your new look and the overall recovery process.  Almost all patients go through this period of discovery, learning, and healing.

All of this information and more will be discussed with you during your initial consult with one of our surgeons. If you have any additional questions we will be happy to answer them over a quick phone call, text or email.
