Overview
The waistline is a problem area for many men and women, but it can be especially problematic for those with sagging skin and muscle laxity. These issues, often present in women who have had children and individuals who have gone through major weight fluctuations, cannot be fixed with diet and exercise alone. This can help you feel better about the way you look, make clothing more comfortable, and even enhance self-confidence.
A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. A tummy tuck is the best for achieving that flat stomach, but please be advised that it will result in a significant scar that can extend from hip to hip. The scar will be noticeable when you are naked, but your panties and bathing suit will cover it.
When you have a consultation with our specialist you will have a detailed examination and need to answer some questions about your medical history, any medications you are taking, and dietary supplements. We may take photos of your abdomen and discuss with you your expectations.

Ideal candidate for Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
The Tummy Tuck is designed for individuals who enjoy general good health and have realistic expectations of what the procedure can do for them. If you are someone that has loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise then this surgery will be effective. The surgery is particularly helpful to women that have children and whose pregnancies have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond a point where they can return to normal.

What should I do Before my Surgery?

The time leading up to your surgery is very important. To get an excellent result from your plastic surgery procedure, there are some checkboxes you'll want to tick leading up to your procedure.
-
Get the lab tests our surgeon instructs, fill out the paperwork we send you, and pay for insurance coverage.
-
STOP SMOKING! WE MEAN IT! By restricting blood vessels, nicotine decreases the blood flow throughout your body. Plastic surgery is extremely delicate, and your blood vessels play a significant role in the results. If they are restricted, the results are compromised.
-
Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.
-
As you prepare for surgery, the healthier the foods you eat, the better. Eating foods that are full of vitamins and minerals and that are excellent sources of fiber will help you heal more quickly after the surgery.
-
If you drink, please limit your alcohol intake. Please stop drinking altogether 2 weeks prior to surgery.
-
• There is no specific weight you need to achieve before getting a tummy tuck. However, a key tip is to reach your target weight or at least get close to it. Remember that reaching your goal weight is different from achieving your ideal body. Many people still have stubborn excess fat in specific areas, even after getting within range of their target weight.
• For best results, start focusing on building muscles several months before your procedure. In addition to helping you get the look you want sooner after surgery, this can also improve your strength and position you for faster healing.

After Surgery

The first night after surgery, you will experience temporary swelling, bruising, pain, tightness, and numbness in the areas where surgery was performed. The first night is the worst (TRUST US). you will experience temporary swelling, bruising, pain, tightness, and numbness.
The pain and discomfort can be controlled with medication. Most patients will require the use of a drain for the first 3-7 days after surgery to direct the excess fluid away from the incision and out of the body. Your abdomen will be secured with an abdominal binder, which is later exchanged for a compression garment. The compression garment must be worn for 6 – 8 weeks to achieve optimal results.

The day after your surgery our nurses will help you shower or sponge bathe (depending on how you feel), evaluate your dressings, and help you with your drain tubes. It is normal for you not to be able to stand straight at first, but you should start light walking as soon as possible to help your body heal faster. (In small quantities of course) You may feel some pain and tenderness at the site for several days. You will have your first control appointment with your surgeon, he will prescribe additional antibiotics, anticoagulants, and pain medication for you to take.

The first week after your surgery, You will have a second control appointment with your doctor on Day 3 and then another on Day 7. During your control appointments, your doctor will decide if it is time to remove the mesh strip bandage. At this time, you should already notice a significant change in your stomach's contour.

You will still be swollen in the treatment area but the pain, bruising, and feeling of tightness will slowly start to go away. You should still be wearing your compression garment, only taking it off to shower and clean it. At this point, you will be accompanied on walks a few times throughout the day to get your blood flowing.
Patients can usually engage in light exercise four weeks after surgery. However, more strenuous moves such as sit-ups and weight lifting should be avoided until six weeks after surgery.

The first month after your surgery, if you are still feeling tired, and a bit sore at this point, don´t worry, it will take a few weeks or months to feel completely like yourself again after surgery. Post-operative swelling can last for several months, you should be able to see your full, final results within 3 - 6 months of the procedure. Your incisions should be fully healed but it is possible that the scars will still be red and raised, don´t worry, eventually, they will become flat and fade.

For about 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, or until your doctor says it's okay, avoid lifting anything that would make you strain. This may include heavy grocery bags and milk containers, a heavy briefcase or backpack, cat litter or dog food bags, a vacuum cleaner, or a child. Do not lift anything over your head for 2 to 3 weeks.

This period is often called the “roller coaster” time period because you will go through mixed emotions of excitement, frustration, and happiness as you come to grips with your new body and the overall recovery process. Almost all patients go through this period of discovery, learning, and healing. You must keep looking forward and realize that over the next several months you will begin to enjoy your new body and its dramatic transformation from surgery.

All of this information and more will be discussed with you during your initial consultation with one of our surgeons. If you have any additional questions we will be happy to answer them over a quick phone call, text, or email.
